Fat deposits can be permanently reduced through facial fat removal, also known as facial liposuction in technical jargon. Full, round cheeks, so-called hamster cheeks, double chin and turkey neck can make affected patients feel partially disfigured. The facial expression, which is conveyed by the unevenly distributed fat deposits on the face, often does not reflect the emotional life of the patient. Those affected suffer from this false perception and the disproportion between body and face. By the teenage years at the latest, the childlike curves in the face have disappeared. However, if this is not the case for hereditry reasons, liposuction on the affected areas of the face is the only solution.

This causes fat to accumulate in the lower part of the face, along the chin and cheeks, which can only be removed by liposuction. Liposuction of the face is a very demanding procedure, as the layer of fat on the face is often very thin compared to the body. The microcannula is guided through the smallest incisions under the facial skin to the affected areas, where it sucks out the fat pockets. Often a local anaesthetic is sufficient for the two to four hour procedure. If desired, the patient can also be put into a twilight sleep so that he or she is hardly aware of the liposuction and the necessary movements in the face. Facial liposuction is a shaping procedure that respects and maintains the natural facial anatomy of the patient. A swollen face is to be expected after liposuction and is completely normal. The use of painkillers and ointments, as well as wearing a compression bandage, support the healing process. It is also important that the patient uses his facial expressions as little as possible after the liposuction. This also includes that the chewing muscles are not stressed by soft food, such as porridge and soups. If the punctures for the suction cannula were sutured, the stitches can be removed after about a week. After about seven days, the patient is fit again and no longer strongly affected by the liposuction. Sun exposure and make-up should definitely be avoided for a while after liposuction of the face.
