Abdominoplasty

The abdomen is the central area that is the first thing that catches the eye in half-dressed people. Psychological studies on test persons have shown that for both men and women, in the swimming pool the abdominal region is noticed first. More and more patients are introducing themselves at our private clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery in Berlin Dahlem with the desire to have an abdominoplasty performed on themselves. This is not only due to the reasons mentioned above, but primarily for the patient’s own well-being. There are many reasons for a slackening of the abdominal wall. These include pregnancies, cesarean section deliveries, weight fluctuations and also genetic predisposition.

In addition, there are patients who also suffer from a slackening or even divergence of the abdominal muscles. These changes on the abdominal wall lead to unattractive skin folds, waves and shapeless skin and also fat excess, all of which are treatable with an abdominoplasty.

Basically, a beautiful and defined abdominal wall serves to increase self-confidence and quality of life. Finally, the region of the abdominal wall is one of the secondary sexual characteristics. In women, we often observe an S-shaped silhouette with a narrow waist and protruding pelvic region. Advantages that we can achieve very well with an inner corset or even a triple corset.

For men we aim for a narrow transition from waist to pelvis. This constellation can also be achieved very well by a tummy tuck (also known as abdominoplasty). In general, abdominoplasty in whatever form it is applied, is a proven remedy for various problems and disorders of the abdominal wall. Therefore, an abdominoplasty can also be used to correct a caesarean section scar or even the scars from appendectomy or other abdominal wall operations. Furthermore, the abdominoplasty can set accents in the silhouette through the targeted use of liposuction, in order to achieve the above-mentioned forms for man and woman.

Liposuction is an additional measure during an abdominoplasty in which we are able to remove additional excess pounds, as part of the overall procedure. It is not uncommon for patients to wish for an abdominoplasty, but they are reluctant to implement their plans for fear of complications. This is mainly about the fear of complications, which are mainly generated by continuous excess weight, as well as wound healing disorders, etc. These patients in particular benefit from additional and radical liposuction during the abdominoplasty, which enables us to improve the overall result even further.

The desire for a feminine or athletic stomach, for freer movement and a beautiful overall body image need not remain an unattainable dream. With an abdominoplasty in combination with liposuction and the application of the inner corset, the overall appearance can be improved, so that the summer, and the visit to the pool, beach or open-air swimming pool no longer becomes something to fear.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is an ‘inner corset’ useful for an abdominoplasty?

We speak of an inner corset when the muscle bellies of the straight abdominal muscles are sewn together during abdominoplasty to strengthen them in the midline. This can be particularly useful if we find a weakness in the abdominal muscles or even a divergence of these two muscle groups in the middle. However, this technique, in which the two muscle groups of the straight abdominal muscles are grasped with strong threads, can also be useful without diverging (so-called rectus diastasis). This is particularly true in cases where the abdominoplasty is also intended to reduce the waist. The abdominoplasty alone only tightens the tissue in a two-dimensional way from top to bottom. By powerfully bringing the straight abdominal muscles together from the costal arches down to the pubic area, the third level of the trunk can also be taken into consideration. This means that abdominoplasty can also be used to tighten and accentuate the waist.

How is an abdominoplasty performed?

In an abdominoplasty, the incision is just above the pubic area. Depending on the size, the cut is then made between the two edges of the pelvis so that it is completely covered by the underwear. The abdominal wall is then detached from the abdominal muscles together with the fatty tissue it contains. This is done over a large area, so that the excess skin and fat can then be removed and cut away by pulling downwards. However, in such an abdominoplasty it must be taken into account that the navel is moved and newly sewn into the skin. Otherwise the tissue above the navel could not be reached and tightened by the abdominoplasty. If the abdominal wall is tightened by removing excess skin, the wound closure over the pubic area can be achieved easily and without much tension.

Is there an alternative to the conventional incision in the pubic area?

In exceptional cases, it may be useful to plan the incision for the abdominoplasty in the shape of an inverted T. The exception to this rule is that, in addition to the incision in the pubic area, a vertical incision is made in the midline of the abdominal wall to the navel, or even above it. This is necessary for an abdominoplasty when the soft tissue and skin masses are so excessive, even in the horizontal plane, that a reduction must take place here. On the other hand, for patients with an excess of soft tissue and skin on the upper abdomen, it may be advisable to make an incision in the upper abdomen in order to achieve an optimal abdominoplasty. However, these are absolute exceptions, as most abdominoplasties can be performed via a conventional incision in the pubic area.

What is a mini abdominoplasty?

Miniabdominoplasty (abdominoplasty)

The tummy tuck is also called an abdominoplasty. In cases where the main excess of soft tissue or skin is located exclusively over the pubic area and does not extend over the region of the navel, a mini-abdominoplasty can be useful. In the case of a ‘small abdominoplasty’, only the lower part of the abdominal wall is tightened without moving the navel and without taking the soft tissues above it into account.
